Claude Pro vs Max: Which Plan Should You Pay For? (2026)
Quick Summary
- Most people: start with Pro. It is $20 a month, or $17 a month if you pay $200 for the year, and it includes Claude Code.
- Upgrade to Max 5x ($100 a month) only when you keep hitting Pro's limits. Anthropic's own advice is to move up "if you consistently hit limits". Max 20x ($200 a month) is the step after that.
- Max is monthly only and no plan has a standing discount, so annual Pro, upgrading later, is the cheapest honest route.
What each plan costs

Anthropic says these are web prices, mobile app prices may vary, and plans and prices can change at its discretion. Its Max plan page confirms the $100 and $200 and says Max is currently monthly only.
What Max adds over Pro
Most features are the same on both: Claude Code, Research, Claude in Chrome, Microsoft 365 and the Opus models are all listed for Pro and Max. Max adds three things.
- More usage. You choose 5x or 20x Pro's usage per five-hour session. Anthropic states the multiple per session, not for the weekly limit.
- Higher output limits for all tasks.
- Fable models in the plan. On Max you can use up to 50% of your weekly limits on Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 at no extra cost, and keep using them beyond that share with usage credits. On Pro they run on pay-as-you-go usage credits, per Anthropic's Fable page.
The pricing page also lists priority access at high-traffic times and early access to advanced features under Max. Its Pro help page lists both for Pro too, so we would not pay extra for those. Anthropic says there is "no fixed message count", so we won't turn 5x or 20x into messages either.
How the usage limits work
Pro and Max use the same two limits, explained on Anthropic's Max plan page:
- A session limit that resets every five hours.
- A weekly limit across all models. It resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account, and your next reset shows in Settings, then Usage.
Claude on the web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code draw from one pool. How fast you use it up depends on conversation length and complexity, the features you use, the model and the effort level. Anthropic may also limit usage in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps, at its discretion.
When you run out: usage credits
Pro and Max subscribers can turn on usage credits and keep working after hitting a limit. Credits are billed at standard API rates, separately from your subscription, and you prepay by adding funds. You can set a monthly cap and switch credits off at any time.
You can also pre-buy credits in usage bundles: $45 for $50 of credit, $200 for $250, or $700 for $1,000. The monthly cap on discounted bundles is $2,000.
That gives you a simple test. Max 5x costs $80 a month more than monthly Pro (our arithmetic). If the credits you would buy to cover your overflow come to well under $80, Pro plus credits costs less. If they would come to more, Max 5x is likely cheaper, though we cannot say how far 5x stretches for your work.
Who should pick which
- Free: you chat now and then. It has no Claude Code.
- Pro: Anthropic describes it as the plan "for everyday work".
- Max 5x: Anthropic calls it a fit for frequent users who work with Claude on a variety of tasks. It tells Pro users to consider it if they consistently hit limits.
- Max 20x: Anthropic calls it a fit for daily users who collaborate often with Claude for most tasks. It suggests it to Max 5x users who consistently hit limits.
- You want Fable models without paying per use: that points to Max.
The cheapest honest way to pay
- Stay on Free if chat is enough.
- Pay for Pro by the year. $200 up front instead of $240 over twelve months saves $40. If you are already on monthly Pro, you can switch to annual under Settings, then Billing. Unused monthly time is credited to your first annual invoice.
- Upgrade only when you hit the limit, and cover the odd heavy week with credits. Moving to Max is billed pro rata for the rest of the cycle. From annual Pro, if the leftover balance is more than the Max price, you get a credit toward future bills, as long as your billing address is unchanged.
Anthropic says it offers no standard discounted pricing on any paid plan and that its support team cannot issue coupons or one-off discounts. It occasionally runs limited-time promotions, announced through its official channels. Students: there is no individual student price either, as our student discount guide explains.
Before you pay: you can cancel any time and the plan stays active until the period ends, but cancel at least 24 hours before renewal to avoid the next charge. Anthropic says payments are generally non-refundable, except where its Consumer Terms of Service say otherwise or local law requires it.
