The short answer
On a $1,500 purchase, what it costs to send the bike back matters more than the sale price. In 2026, three of the four direct ebike brands we checked ran Labor Day discounts, and only one printed an end date.

The four sale brands we reviewed needed no code on September 1, 2026. Vivi has one code we list, checked September 28, 2026: AWIN02, 8% off parts and accessories, not a complete bike. 14
Cards
We have no card rate to recommend and will not invent one. The thing to avoid is a store "no interest if paid in full" plan on a bike this size, because an unpaid balance gets back-billed to the purchase date. 13

The lowest entry price of the four direct brands. The Portola started at $895 when we looked on September 1, 2026, and the site was showing "Limited Time Discount" and "Sale!" markers across most of the range. Thirty-day returns, one-year warranty, free shipping to the contiguous 48.
Two of the six models on the front page were marked out of stock on September 1, 2026, so a listed price was not always a bike you could get. Returns carry terms and model exclusions the front page does not spell out. Shipping to Canada starts at $100.

The only brand we reviewed that will take back a bike you have ridden. Thirty days from receipt, and a used bike still qualifies if it is under twenty miles. Its homepage offered free shipping on all ebike orders when we checked on September 1, 2026.
A ridden return costs 30% of the original purchase price, and you pay the return shipping on top. On a $2,199 bike that is not a small number. Work out what a mistake costs before you order.

The one direct brand with a real shop network behind it: the dealer locator lists 2,000+ bike shops that assemble, tune and service the bikes. Longest coverage of the brands we reviewed, a 2 Year Warranty plus a Lifetime Frame Warranty.
Returns are tighter than the warranty suggests: 14 days for a new bike, 30 days for a used one, and a used return costs 50% of the purchase price with a 20-mile odometer limit.

Consumer Reports puts it plainly: most bike shops sell e-bikes, and the sales and service staff are typically quite knowledgeable about them. You get assembly done right, someone to go back to, and a test ride before you commit.
You will pay more than a direct brand charges, and the shop may not stock the model you read about. Consumer Reports also notes that taking a direct-bought bike to a shop for assembly "will cost you", so price that in either way.

The deepest headline discount of the four when we checked on September 1, 2026. It advertised up to $645 off, with the XP Lite2 at $1,099 and the XP4 750 at $1,299. One year warranty, free shipping.
The worst return terms of the brands we reviewed. Fourteen days, a restocking fee of up to $300, you pay return shipping, and an ebike is not returnable at all once it has been ridden. Buy here only if you are certain.

When to buy it
- Labor Day weekend, early September
- Three of the four brands ran a named Labor Day event in 2026, and exactly one of them attached a date to it. Rad Power said its $200 off the RadWagon 5 ran through Labor Day. Lectric and Aventon printed no end date at all, and Aventon hedged with "While Supplies Last". Ride1Up was discounting but never used the words Labor Day. Trade coverage published on August 25, 2026 had the Aventure 3 at $1,799. 1 4 6 9 12
- Black Friday, November 27, 2026
- Thanksgiving falls on November 26 in 2026, so Black Friday is the 27th. That date is all we can give you. We looked for a source establishing that ebike discounts run deeper on Black Friday than at Labor Day and did not find one we could open, so this is a date on the calendar rather than a recommendation to wait. 1
- Not a window: waiting for tariff prices to unwind
- Bikes of all types, including e-bikes, were hit by tariffs that took effect on April 2, 2025, and manufacturers raised prices. Consumer Reports reported in its guide updated March 27, 2026 that after those tariffs were struck down in early 2026 and makers filed for rebates, elevated prices remained in place. The relief already arrived and the prices did not follow it down, so holding out for that is not a plan. 2
The long answer
The return policy is the real price difference
Three direct brands, three different answers to the same question. Lectric gives you 14 days, charges a restocking fee of up to $300, makes you pay return shipping, and will not take the bike at all once it has been ridden. Aventon gives 14 days on a new bike and 30 on a used one, but a used return costs 50% of the purchase price and the odometer has to read under twenty miles. Rad Power gives 30 days, takes a ridden bike under twenty miles, and charges 30%. On a bike near $2,000 those gaps are worth more than any of the 2026 Labor Day discounts on this page. The honest way to shop this category is to price the mistake first. 5 7 10
US ebike cashback exists, but it should not choose the bike for you
Tenmomo pays cashback on three US ebike brands: Vivi at 12%, Vanpowers at 15% and NAKTO at 6%, the rates on their store pages here and in our affiliate data — Vanpowers and NAKTO checked September 28, 2026, Vivi's rate re-read October 9, 2026. They sit at the foot of the table, below the five sellers we reviewed for price, returns and service. Rate alone is not a product recommendation: we did not re-check those three brands’ model prices, returns, service networks, or UL 2849 claims. VELOWAVE, a fourth programme our feed once listed, has no store page here, so there is no cashback for you to claim on it. 14
UL 2849, and where it is actually the law
UL 2849 is the Standard for Electrical Systems for eBikes. It certifies the electrical drive train, battery system and charger system as one assembly rather than testing the battery alone, which matters because most of the failures people worry about happen at the interfaces. Two dates are worth knowing. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission called on December 20, 2022 for manufacturers, retailers, importers and distributors to comply with the established UL standards. And New York City's Initiative 663-A was passed on March 2, 2023 and signed on March 20. Anyone selling, leasing or distributing e-bikes in the city had until September 16, 2023 to get certified. If you are buying in New York, certification is not a nice-to-have. Elsewhere it is a reasonable filter to apply, not a reason to be frightened. 11
Direct or a bike shop
Consumer Reports is not neutral on this and says why. It is "not bullish on any type of bike sold through big-box stores" because "the salespeople are seldom bicycle experts", which it ties directly to assembly and repair quality. It notes that most bike shops sell e-bikes and that their staff are typically quite knowledgeable. It also concedes the cost side: you can take a direct-bought bike to a local shop for assembly, "but it will cost you". Aventon is the interesting middle here, since it sells direct but lists 2,000+ shops that will assemble and service what you bought. 2 8
What a good ebike costs, and what a review is measuring
Consumer Reports puts the category at roughly $600 to around $4,000, with its top-rated models generally between $1,000 and $4,000. Its ratings break down into range, acceleration, hill climbing, speed control response, and how the bike rides on pedal power alone once the battery is flat. That last one is the measure most buyers never think about and the one that decides how bad your worst day on the bike is. Every price on this page sits inside that band, which is a reason to compare terms rather than chase the lowest number. 2

When is the best time to buy an electric bike?
Whenever the return terms suit you. Three of the four brands we checked ran Labor Day events in 2026, though only Rad Power printed an end date. Black Friday is November 27 in 2026, but we could not source a claim that ebike discounts go deeper then, so we will not tell you to wait for it. 1 4
Is there a working ebike coupon code?
Not at the four sale brands. When we checked their front pages on September 1, 2026, each applied its advertised discount at checkout without a code. Vivi has one code we list, checked September 28, 2026: AWIN02 takes 8% off components and accessories, not a complete electric bike.
Do you pay cashback on electric bikes?
On three brands: Vivi at 12%, Vanpowers at 15% and NAKTO at 6% for US shoppers — Vanpowers and NAKTO checked September 28, 2026, Vivi's rate re-read October 9, 2026. Open the brand from its store page here first, or the order cannot be tracked to you. The five sellers above them in the table pay us nothing, and VELOWAVE has no store page here, so there is no cashback for you to claim on it. 14
Should I buy direct or from a bike shop?
Direct is cheaper up front; a shop is cheaper when something goes wrong. Consumer Reports says most bike shops sell e-bikes and their staff are typically quite knowledgeable, and warns that shop assembly of a direct-bought bike "will cost you". Aventon splits the difference with a network of 2,000+ shops. 2 8
Do I need a UL 2849 certified ebike?
In New York City, yes: under Initiative 663-A, anyone selling, leasing or distributing e-bikes there had until September 16, 2023 to be certified. Everywhere else it is not a legal requirement, but the CPSC asked the industry to comply with the UL standards in December 2022, and it certifies the battery, charger and drive train together rather than in isolation. 11

What we don't cover
- Model-level prices, inventory, return terms, and UL 2849 claims for Vivi, Vanpowers and NAKTO. We verified their store pages, rates and codes, not every product claim on their sites.
- Other cashback portals. We do not track their rates, so we cannot tell you whether one of them pays on a brand where we pay nothing.
- The model-year calendar. Several sites claim last year's ebikes get marked down on a fixed schedule when new models land. The only sources we found for it were retailers describing their own sales, so we did not put a window on this page we could not stand behind.
- Whether Black Friday beats Labor Day for ebikes. We have the date and nothing else. No source we could open compared the two.
- REI, Trek, Specialized and Best Buy. REI's site would not respond for us at all, and we did not open the others, so they are not described here even though all sell ebikes.
- Battery range and reliability. We did not test a bike. Consumer Reports rates range, hill climbing and pedal-only performance, and that is the place to look.
- Whether any specific model is UL 2849 certified. We describe the standard and where it is law. Checking a given bike is on you, at the listing.
- Card rewards. We have no card-rate database, so this page names no card rate at all rather than guessing at one.
- Financing terms at these brands. Ride1Up advertises Affirm plans; we did not read the terms and are not describing them.
