Mac mini M6: Where and When to Buy

The M4 Mac mini started at $599 with 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage when Apple announced it in October 2024. In May 2026 Apple stopped selling the 256GB configuration, which moved the entry price to $799 for a 512GB machine. The M6 brings 256GB back and prices it at $899. Same memory, same storage, $300 more than two years ago. ^{11 14 1 19 3}

The reason Apple pulled the cheap configuration was cost. Tim Cook pointed at demand for Macs as AI machines and warned of significantly higher memory costs in the quarter, against an industry-wide memory shortage driven by AI datacentre buildout. Retailer discounts on the M4 kept coming anyway: $100 off within two weeks of launch, $120 off at Black Friday a year later. But those cuts came out of reseller margin, not Apple's list price, and a tight component market is the environment in which reseller margin gets thin. ^{14 12 13}

Two separate things get confused every autumn. Education pricing is a permanent $100 off, taking the M6 mini to $799, and it is open to college students, people accepted to college, their parents, and faculty and staff from K-12 up. The back-to-school gift card offer is a limited promotion running July 16 to September 24, 2026, and its eligible-product list is MacBook Pro ($150 card), MacBook Air ($100), iPad Air ($100) and iPad Pro ($100). Mac mini is not on it. Buy a mini with education pricing and you get the $100 off and no gift card. ^{1 10 9}

Best Buy is the aggressive one right now: up to $500 credit for an M4 mini, which it advertises as bringing the M6 down to $399, and the offer dies at 7:59am CT on September 22. Apple runs its own programme year-round, and is candid that the number depends on the device, model, manufacturer and condition. Apple applies the credit only after it receives your machine and confirms the condition matches what you described, and says the in-store figure can differ from the online estimate. Treat any quoted trade-in value as a ceiling. ^{5 6}

Apple takes Mac returns within 14 days of the date you receive the product. Separately, if Apple cuts the price of an Apple-branded product within 14 calendar days of you receiving it, you can ask for a refund of the difference, in a store or through Retail Customer Care, within 14 days of the price change, capped at 10 units per product. The carve-out matters: it does not apply to limited-time reductions and special sale events like Black Friday, which is when the interesting cuts happen. ⁸

Apple Certified Refurbished machines carry the standard one-year limited warranty, go through full functional testing, and are advertised at savings of up to 15%. On September 1, 2026 we opened Apple's refurbished Mac page and found no Mac mini listed at all. Refurbished stock of a model that has not shipped yet does not exist, and the outgoing M4 has not reappeared there either. If 15% off matters more to you than the M6, this page is worth a check every few weeks rather than a decision today. ^{15 16}

Apple claims up to 4x faster AI performance, 2x faster storage and graphics, and 40 percent faster CPU than the M4 mini. The base M6 is a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU with 16GB of unified memory, three Thunderbolt 4 ports and two USB-C ports, 2.5Gb Ethernet standard with a 10Gb option, and Wi-Fi 7. If your workload is a browser, a terminal and a video call, none of that is $300 of difference. ¹

Neither gets you a machine before September 22, so a preorder only holds your place in the queue. If you can live without it for a few more weeks, the M4 precedent favours waiting: it was $100 under list at Amazon fourteen days after it began shipping. ^{1 11 12}

Apple almost never moves its own list price mid-generation. It changed the M4's entry price by deleting a configuration, not by discounting one. The cuts come from resellers. Amazon is already $19 under three days in, was $100 under on the M4 within two weeks, and $120 under a year later at Black Friday. ^{14 3 12 13}

Yes, $799 instead of $899, direct from Apple. It covers current and newly accepted college students and their parents, plus faculty and staff at all grade levels including homeschool teachers. It does not come with a back-to-school gift card, because Mac mini is not an eligible product for that promotion. ^{1 10 9}

Apple no longer sells it. The 256GB M4 was discontinued in May 2026 and no M4 appears in Apple's current lineup, so what is left is reseller stock. For reference, the base M4 sold at $499 as recently as January 2026. If you find remaining stock near that, it is the cheapest way into a modern Mac desktop. ^{14 2 20}
