Laptops: Where and When to Buy

Last verified · How we are paid

The short answer

This is a good week to buy and a bad week to browse. Two dated discounts running right now beat anything on the calendar until late November, and both expire within the month. If neither fits you, the next real window is Black Friday.

Where to buy

Depends on your budget. Under $500, refurbished business laptops from PC Liquidations start near $372 with a 90-day warranty. Over that, eBay's LABORDAY20 takes 20% off, capped at $500. Students should buy Macs from Apple. 3 4 1 2 6

When to buy

Now, if you were buying anyway. LABORDAY20 and Best Buy's Windows PC sale both end September 7. Apple's education gift card ends September 24. After that the calendar is empty until Black Friday. 1 2 5 7 15

Codes

Two codes work today. eBay: LABORDAY20, 20% off, $500 cap, expires September 7. CyberPowerPC: GAMER2026, 5% off orders over $999. Apple, Dell, Lenovo and Best Buy publish no code. Their discounts are built into the price. 1 2 13 11

Cards

Apple Card pays 3% on purchases at Apple, about $33 on a $1,099 MacBook Air. B&H's Payboo store card credits back your sales tax, which on a $1,099 laptop beats 3% in most places. We won't guess what your card pays. 10 6 18

Where to buy it

Retailer Cashback Code Good for Watch out
PC Liquidations 3 4 The cheapest real laptop on this page. Off-lease business machines from Dell, Lenovo and HP, refurbished and running Windows 11, listed today from $371.99 for a 14-inch i7 Latitude. Every unit carries a 90-day limited warranty. If your budget is under $500 and you need a working keyboard rather than a new one, start here. These are used machines with used batteries and screens that were someone's work laptop. Returns are 30 days from the invoice date, you pay return shipping both ways, and you have to request an RMA first. Nothing here is current-generation.
eBay 1 2 LABORDAY20 20% off select laptops, computers and accessories. Capped at $500 off, two uses per buyer, expires September 7, 2026. Shown on eBay's own deals page as "20% off tech, fashion, and more"; the cap, the two-use limit and the expiry come from DealNews. 1 2 The largest live discount anywhere this week, and it stacks on top of already-marked-down stock from Apple, HP, Dell, Lenovo and Acer. eBay Refurbished units come with a one or two year Allstate warranty, which is more coverage than most retailers give on a new laptop. A $500 cap means the 20% stops helping above $2,500. Condition varies by seller, and "select" is doing real work in the terms. Check that the listing you want is actually eligible before you count on the discount.
Apple 6 7 8 9 The only place a student should buy a Mac this month. The 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 is $1,099, or $999 with education pricing; the 15-inch is $1,299, or $1,199. Through September 24 an education purchase also earns a gift card, $100 on MacBook Air and $150 on MacBook Pro. Apple is also the only seller here that refunds the difference if it cuts the price within 14 days. Education pricing needs verification, and the gift card offer ends September 24. The price-protection refund excludes sale events such as Black Friday, which is exactly when the price will move. Apple itself almost never discounts a current Mac.
Best Buy 5 Running up to $600 off select Windows PCs as part of a Labor Day sale that ends Monday, September 7. Worth checking this week specifically because you can see the machine before buying it, which matters more on laptops than on anything else in this category. "Select" and "up to" are both load-bearing. We could not open Best Buy's site to check which models qualify, so treat the $600 as a ceiling on a handful of configurations rather than a discount you should expect.
Dell 11 Buying direct is where Dell's own discount programmes live. Student, military and first responder, senior, and employee pricing are all separate named programmes on its site. Dell Outlet sells certified refurbished machines through the same shop. Returns run 30 days from the invoice date. Dell publishes no public coupon code, and the return policy has exceptions: some products cannot be returned at any time. Dell's pages would not render pricing for us, so we quote no Dell price here.
Lenovo 12 Advertises a price match guarantee alongside student and business pricing, which makes it a reasonable place to shop even when someone else is cheaper, because you can ask them to match. It also lists a clearance section and Best Buy pickup for its own machines. The terms of the price match are on a separate page we could not read, so we do not know which competitors count or how long the window is. Ask before you rely on it.
CyberPowerPC 13 GAMER2026 5% instant rebate on orders over $999, entered at checkout. Listed on CyberPowerPC's own front page as its Labor Day offer. The page states no expiry date. 13 For a prebuilt gaming desktop or gaming laptop, this is the one seller on the page publishing a code you can actually type. Today it also lists $100 off gaming desktops and laptops, up to $300 extra off prebuilt desktops, and 0% APR Affirm financing for up to six months. A sample prebuilt was $949, marked down from $1,199. Stacking rules are not spelled out, so assume the instant rebates and the code may not combine. Configure-to-order machines ship on a schedule rather than immediately. Compare against building it yourself before you decide the discount is real.

When to buy it

Now through Monday, September 7 (Labor Day)
eBay's LABORDAY20 takes 20% off select computers, capped at $500, and Best Buy is running up to $600 off select Windows PCs. Both end September 7. CyberPowerPC is running its own Labor Day code with no stated end date. 1 2 5 13
Through September 24: Apple's education offer
Buy a Mac with education pricing before September 24 and Apple adds a gift card: $100 on MacBook Air, $150 on MacBook Pro. The promotion opened July 16 and covers MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iPad Air and iPad Pro. Nothing else on Apple's lineup qualifies. 7
The day a replacement model opens for preorder
The outgoing generation gets cut hardest the moment its successor is announced, not months later. On March 4, 2026, the day M5 MacBook Air preorders opened, Amazon dropped M4 MacBook Airs by $100 to $300. 9to5Toys logged two of those configurations as Amazon all-time lows that day. 14
Late June: Amazon's Prime Day
Already gone for 2026. It ran June 23 to 26, and competing retailers started their own discounts early and ran them late rather than matching the dates exactly. If you are reading this in September, this window is not coming back until next summer. 16
Black Friday week, late November
The deepest reliable cut of the year. During Black Friday week 2025 Amazon took $250 off every M4 MacBook Air configuration, putting the 13-inch base model at $749 against a $999 list price. That is 25% on a current-generation Apple laptop. 15

The long answer

Refurbished is the honest answer to "cheapest", and most guides skip it

A three-year-old Dell Latitude that came off a corporate lease is a better machine than a new $400 laptop, and it costs about the same. PC Liquidations lists a 14-inch Latitude with an i7-1165G7, 8GB and a 256GB NVMe SSD at $371.99, and a 17-inch Precision workstation with an i7 and 16GB at $789.99. Every item carries a 90-day limited warranty. The trade is real and worth stating plainly: you are buying a used battery, a used screen and a used keyboard, the return window is 30 days from invoice, and you pay shipping both ways on a return. If you need a laptop for a browser, a document and a video call, this is where the money goes furthest. 3 4

Why laptop prices stopped falling the way they used to

Memory is expensive. Apple pulled the cheapest Mac mini configuration off sale in May 2026 and Tim Cook warned of significantly higher memory costs in the quarter, against an industry-wide shortage driven by AI datacentre buildout. The same pressure shows in laptops: the entry MacBook Air was $999 with 256GB in the M4 generation and is $1,099 with 512GB in the M5. More storage for the money, but a higher number at the register. Advice built on the assumption that any laptop will be 20% cheaper if you wait a quarter is advice from a different market. 17 15 6

What "on sale" actually means at each kind of seller

Three different mechanics get called the same thing. Manufacturers like Dell and Lenovo run permanent segment pricing for students, military, seniors and business buyers, so their "sale" is usually a question of which programme you qualify for rather than which week it is. Retailers like Best Buy and Amazon run calendar events, which is why the same laptop has a documented all-time low in late November and not in September. Marketplaces like eBay run stacking codes, which is why a 20% code there can beat a retailer event outright. Knowing which kind of seller you are dealing with tells you whether to wait. 11 12 5 15 1

Prebuilt gaming PCs and gaming laptops are a separate market

Builders sell direct and discount continuously rather than seasonally. CyberPowerPC today lists a code for 5% off orders over $999, $100 off gaming desktops and laptops, up to $300 extra off prebuilt desktops, and interest-free Affirm financing for six months, with a sample prebuilt at $949 from $1,199. Origin PC, another US builder, runs a prebuilt line, an outlet store and its own EON gaming laptops. The useful consequence: on this side of the market a code entered at checkout is normal, where on the laptop side it is nearly extinct. 13 19

Labor Day is a real window for laptops, unlike most holidays

It lands at the end of the back-to-school season, when retailers still have inventory bought for August. Last year that produced real cuts rather than banners. Over Labor Day weekend 2025 Engadget logged the 13-inch M4 MacBook Air at $799 against a $999 list at Amazon, and the 15-inch at $999 against $1,199, calling them the best prices since the pair debuted that March. This year the equivalent levers are a 20% marketplace code and a Best Buy Windows event, both ending September 7. 20 1 5

The two windows nobody schedules around, and should

The first is a product launch you are not buying into. When Apple opened M5 MacBook Air preorders on March 4, 2026, the M4 models it replaced fell $100 to $300 the same day, two of them to the lowest Amazon prices tracked up to then. The second is the fourteen days after you buy from Apple, when Apple will refund a price difference if it cuts the price. The exception is sale events like Black Friday, and that carve-out is the one that matters. Neither window appears on a shopping calendar, and both are worth more than most of the ones that do. 14 9

Questions people ask

What is the single cheapest way to get a working laptop right now?

A refurbished off-lease business laptop. PC Liquidations lists 14-inch i7 Latitudes at $371.99 with a 90-day warranty. Nothing new at that price will match the build quality, and nothing else on this page goes lower. 3 4

Is there a coupon code that actually works on a laptop?

Yes, two, and both are on the seller's own site rather than a coupon aggregator. eBay is running LABORDAY20 for 20% off select computers with a $500 cap until September 7. CyberPowerPC is running GAMER2026 for 5% off orders over $999. Apple, Dell, Lenovo and Best Buy publish no code, so do not go hunting for one. 1 2 13

Should I wait for Black Friday?

If you can wait twelve weeks, yes. Black Friday week 2025 put every M4 MacBook Air configuration at $250 off, with the 13-inch base at $749 against $999. Nothing in September approaches that on a current-generation machine. If you need a laptop this month, the eBay code is the better of the two things available. 15 1

Is the student discount worth it?

On a Mac this month, clearly. Education pricing takes the 13-inch MacBook Air from $1,099 to $999, and until September 24 an education purchase also earns a $100 gift card, or $150 on a MacBook Pro. Dell and Lenovo run their own student programmes year-round, though we could not read their current terms. 6 7 8 11 12

Should I buy the older model when a new one comes out?

Often, and the moment to do it is preorder day for the new one, not later. On March 4, 2026 the M4 MacBook Airs dropped $100 to $300 at Amazon the same day M5 preorders opened, two of them to the lowest prices tracked up to then. Waiting past that day usually means waiting for stock to run out instead. 14

Where should I buy a prebuilt gaming PC?

Direct from a builder, because that is where the discounts and the financing live. CyberPowerPC is currently listing a 5% code, $100 off desktops and laptops, up to $300 extra off prebuilts and interest-free Affirm financing. Origin PC is another US builder with a prebuilt line and an outlet. Compare either against the cost of the parts before deciding. 13 19

Do I get cashback through you on any of this?

No. None of the seven sellers above pays us anything on this page. We do have an affiliate relationship with PC Liquidations, but we have not built its store page yet, so this page carries no link that earns us a commission and there is no cashback for you to claim.

How we are paid

We are a cashback site and this page earns us nothing. Three things you should know. We have no affiliate relationship at all with eBay, Apple, Best Buy, Lenovo or CyberPowerPC. With Dell we have one, but it is Dell's Australia and New Zealand programme, which pays us nothing on a US purchase and is the reason we put no Dell price on this page. With PC Liquidations we have a real US relationship, and we have still put it first, because $371.99 is the lowest price here and it would be first either way. We have not built its store page, so nothing on this page links to it in a way that pays us, and there is no cashback for you to claim on it. Where we do earn a commission, we say so on that page.

What we don't cover

  • Costco, Micro Center, Newegg and B&H. All four sell laptops and three of them are worth your time. Their sites blocked our checks on September 1, 2026, and we do not publish prices or policies we could not read ourselves.
  • Best Buy's open-box programme, its student deals, and which models qualify for the $600 discount. Its site would not open for us.
  • Other cashback portals. We do not track what a competing portal pays on laptop purchases, so we cannot tell you whether one of them beats zero here.
  • Credit cards beyond Apple Card and B&H Payboo. We have no card-rules database yet and will not guess what your card pays on electronics.
  • Whether any of these seasonal sales repeat at the same depth. We show what last year did and leave the bet to you.
  • Desktops and mini PCs, except prebuilt gaming machines. Also every price outside the United States, and stock at any particular store near you.
